such as eye tracking so that the screen stays on while a user is looking
at it. Innovative software features are fantastic, but that is not the
main reason for pre-ordering 9 million before the gadget launch – even
with few people getting to play on Android’s latest smartphone until it

Software with a good first impression
Galaxy S3 is that the phone has some genuinely useful features: Smart
Stay, the eye-tracking feature that keeps the display on while you’re
looking at the phone. That will probably demo very well in a retail
environment and get people interested in the phone. Likewise, Samsung’s
foray into the voice-enabled future with S Voice is going to be a killer
way to get noticed. The Samsung’s most innovative feature is built-in
face-tracking and voice control – allowing, Samsung claims, for a more
‘natural’ control system.
S Voice – You may be thinking Siri with Apple this
moment when talking about S Voice. That is true. Even Apple has to deal
with constant complaints from users that don’t’ much care for Siri after
the honeymoon period. Features like Smart Stay and S Voice are just
good selling points – a way to get phones out the door- and Samsung
knows that in a clear way!
An improvement to voice control, called S-Voice, that lets users
control their phone using normal, natural language. So it’s like Siri,
only it does more – you can say volume up, for instance, and the phone
will filter out the noise of the song it’s playing so it can hear you.
The S, we assume, stands for Samsung.
Smart Stay – In among those things is a new sensor
that tracks your eyes – so long as you’re looking at the S3’s screen, it
won’t dim or lock itself. Yes, you could just set the screen timer to
longer, but “Smart Stay” means you don’t have to. In use, the feature
seemed to work very well, with a little icon indicating the phone is
watching your eyes.
Other features:
Best Screen: It will also pay tribute to Samsung’s
expertise in screens, with a large 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen running a
resolution of 1280 x 720p – far bigger than Apple’s iPhone, and close
in size to the smaller end of the tablet market.
Intelligent Lock System: Other innovations include
what Samsung claims is a ‘more intelligent’ lock system, that keeps the
screen ‘awake’ when the phone’s camera senses eyes watching it, rather
than turning it off.
Buddy Photo Share: Elsewhere, the phone adds useful
features that, for instance, can automatically share a photograph you
take with people whose faces are recognised, called ‘Buddy Photo Share’,
or display social media profiles directly on a photograph when those
face are recognised. These are features that are useful rather than
revolutionary, but they feel like they will be obvious standards in the
near future. Tagging groups and offering an automatic slideshow zooming
into the faces in a picture are also useful additions.
